Is former employer responsible for work related accident

An Avvo.com Q&A user asked:

Is an employer responsible for medical bills for a work related accident if you no longer work there?
My daughter cut her finger while employed at a deli and was treated at the local hospital. As the bills came in, they were given to her employer to pay. The bills came to me as covered under my name and insurance due to a hospital error that did not initially list this as a workers comp claim. One bill however got lost in the shuffle amongst my own medical bills. When it was discovered it was from her accident we gave it to her employer and was told that because she no longer worked there, no more bills would be paid for her because she’s no longer in their system. Is this true or must they pay since it was from her on the job injury no matter if she still works there or not? The bill is going to collections under my name. We live in Florida.

Our response

Your daughters’ employer is responsible for all medical treatment associated with her injury on the job regardless of whether or not she is still working for that employer. The law is very clear on that point.
